Information on Homeschooling in Alabama

Alabama has complicated homeschooling laws. To homeschool a child, a parent must choose whether to provide a home tutor or operate the homeschool under the control of a church. The rules regarding instruction and testing are dependent on which option the parent chooses.
  1. Hours

    • If a homeschool operates under the tutoring option, the school must provide instruction for a minimum of 140 days per year and at least three hours each day between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Homeschools operating under the control of a church are exempt from this requirement.

    Attendance

    • All children between the ages of 7 and 16 must attend school, according to state law in Alabama. Church schools are exempt from mandatory attendance.

    Qualifications

    • Homeschools operating under the guidance of a church do not have any mandated qualifications for homeschool teachers. If a homeschool operates under the private tutor option, the tutor must be certified to teach in Alabama.
