Homeschool Teacher Certification

While every state allows homeschooling, there will be varying levels of compliance, depending on where you live. Support for homeschooling can come in many forms, including getting information from state or national associations, involving yourself in a local community group and obtaining teacher certification.
  1. Parent Certification

    • Homeschooling parents must notify their state or local education agency and check for certification requirements before educating their children at home. Most states do not require certification for parents.

    Homeschooling Other Children

    • Teachers and college students may be interested in teaching or tutoring children other than their own as a viable source of income. Opportunities for this type of work, while lucrative, are limited.

    Requirements

    • If you’re interested in pursuing a homeschooling career, you’ll find that most states’ homeschooling teacher requirements are equivalent to the requirements for a public school teacher and involve obtaining certification.

    Public School Teaching

    • Public school teaching requirements include having a bachelor’s degree and a teaching certificate. This is the same certificate you would use for homeschooling. Again, criteria varies by state, so check with your state for homeschool teaching requirements.

    Teaching Without a Certificate

    • You may be allowed to teach without a certificate but may still be required to have an associate degree or some level of education along with supervision by a local board or school for passing standards.
