Homeschooling Cons

When making the choice to home school children instead of sending them to public school, parents should carefully consider the drawbacks. Don't forget to face the hard questions and issues that come up when discussing the prospect of home schooling. Even if the decision to home school is the right one for you, take time to consider the cons of teaching your youngsters at home.
  1. Peer Interaction Issues

    • Home schooled kids spend less time with a diverse peer group than children who attend public school. Parents who teach their children at home may go to great lengths to provide peer interaction experiences--setting up field trips with other homeschooling families or joining clubs and youth groups. Kids who enjoy their peer interaction through controlled outings and club memberships are not as skilled in dealing with others raised in vastly different circumstances or with dissimilar values. Once a home schooled child leaves the home environment for school or work, he may not have learned to deal with other people the way his public-schooled peers did.

    Financial Concerns

    • Home-schooling families don't deal with the financial strain of public school book fees, supply and clothing expenses, or school lunch prices. However, the commitment to teach children at home does contain some financial drawbacks. In order to provide educational instruction, one parent must make a full time commitment to teaching, leaving little or no time to earn an outside income. If the family chooses to purchase a home-school curriculum, the expense can put a strain on already tight finances.

    Cabin Fever

    • Similar to the feeling of being cooped up inside during a snowstorm, home schooled kids can experience a sense of isolation and restlessness. It can wear on the homeschooling parent and student to spend so much time in the same place. You can break up the time spent at home for instruction with outings, but the bulk of the learning takes place at the house. When home and school are one, the day-to-day sameness of the situation can impede learning.
