Homebound Instruction Laws in Kansas

The state of Kansas does not regulate home-schooling in Kansas, nor does it regulate private schools, with the exception of requiring registering the school once with the state. The state does have laws covering school attendance based on age.
  1. Requirements

    • Children between 7 and 18 must attend school in Kansas for 1,116 academic hours per school year. Instructors in private, parochial and home schools must be competent, but the state does not require certification. The statutes do not require private schools to keep records of a student's performance.

    Considerations

    • Teachers in home-schooling settings or in private schools need to provide a curriculum in keeping with the philosophy of the school. Parochial schools need to provide some class time for religious studies and home-schooled students need to go on field trips outside the home to broaden the student's experience. The state permits teaching exceptional and special-needs children at home.

    Options

    • When taking a child out of public schools in Kansas, parents or guardians must let the school know. Missing more than three days in a row without an excuse results in a truant status and the school investigates the situation. Students who receive home-schooling in Kansas may participate in activities at their local public school, depending on the school district.
