How to Create a Homeschool Group Website

A homeschool group website is an effective way to communicate information about instruction, share extracurricular activities and get new supplemental resources that enrich homeschool learning experiences for any type of homeschool, religious or nonsecular. In addition, it can be a good venue to keep kids connected both inside and outside classroom walls.

Instructions

    • 1

Open up a hosting site with website templates. Providers like GoDaddy and Yahoo charge a small fee, but some, like Google, will provide one at no cost.

    • 2

Click on the "Create a New Site" button.

    • 3

Select a template to use that communicates the group's theme. Themes might include soccer and sports, classmates and peers or a family theme. Click on "Browse the Gallery" to see more.

    • 4

Type in the code and click "Create Site" once a theme is identified.

    • 5

Decide on a name for the group that communicates the group's mission and goals. If secular, you might choose a more secular tone such as "Homeschool Nerds." If a religious group, select one with a religious tone. Think of a name that suits your group, and then place the group's name in the "Main Title" link.

    • 6

Click "Edit Sidebar" to begin plugging in page titles and page content. Create one page for field trips, another for communication and news and another for shared curriculum materials, such as lessons and supplemental reading. Create any other pages needed, such as for games or show-and-tell for sharing of projects.

    • 7

Add in a "Group" with which to communicate beyond the website. Click on "More" across the top of the Google bar and "Create." Once the group opens up, plug in several topics of interest to begin discussions. As participants join in, they'll click "Discuss" to piggy-back discussions. Creating a group will make content searchable and accessible.

List your new group website with the state's homeschool association, so it may be placed on other websites and in newsletters.
