How to Teach Little Girls Modesty and Femininity

According to a study conducted by the Kaiser Family Foundation in 2001, three out of four prime time television shows contain sexual references. As a result, little girls are growing up more quickly and often spend more of their childhood wearing makeup and learning provocative behavior from television and other media. However, that does not mean we should stop teaching little girls about modesty and femininity in an effort to maintain their innocence and show that these virtues help guide behavior.

Instructions

    • 1

Discuss modesty and femininity with your daughter and focus on what it means. Discuss that femininity means strength, and discuss what attributes someone might consider feminine, such as being caring, graceful or kind.

    • 2

Give your daughter a guide for what you consider to be modest and feminine. For instance, some may consider that anything above the knee is considered immodest, while others may think that showing any part of the leg is immodest. Make sure your standards are clear.

    • 3

Provide examples of those in the entertainment industry who are modest and feminine and those that are not. Discuss what others think of those who are not modest or feminine. Discuss how dressing modestly offers protection to a young woman.

    • 4

Answer your daughter's questions about modesty and femininity to the best of your ability. Make sure that you find an answer if you do not know it off-hand.

    • 5

Avoid purchasing clothing and underclothes for your daughter that are inappropriate for your daughter's age and may damage your child's self-image.

    • 6

Set a good example by dressing with the same standards that you have for your daughter. If you go out with friends, don't wear revealing clothing as it will contradict your statements and undermine your daughter's beliefs in what you say about modesty and femininity.
