Creative Ways to Teach Your Kids to Remember Bible Verses

According to the Bible, memorizing scripture is a vital discipline for believers of any age: Psalm 119:11 reads, "Thy word have I hidden in my heart, that I may not sin against you." Scripture gives comfort, joy and a way to avoid doubt and temptation. Using a creative method to instill the word of God in your children will make the experience fun and enjoyable.
  1. Cover Up or Erase Words

    • Write the Bible verse out on a board and recite it together with your kids. Then, either cover up one of the words with a piece of paper or erase it from the board. Have the kids recite the verse again. Continue eliminating more words between each round and have the children recite the verse again each time. Uncover or rewrite a word if they have trouble remembering it. Repeat the process until all the words are covered up or erased and they have the verse memorized.

    Puzzles

    • Write each individual word of a verse and reference onto pieces of paper. Have your kids work together to put the words in the right order. If they have trouble, let them look up the verse to solve the puzzle. You could also put individual words on a poster board, draw out a puzzle, and cut along the lines to make a jigsaw puzzle. The kids can work together to assemble the jigsaw puzzle and reveal the scripture verse. Another great puzzle idea involves writing each word of a verse on individual cans and mixing them up. The kids put the cans in the correct order to solve the puzzle and read the Bible verse.

    Toss the Ball

    • Assign a Bible verse and reference for your kids to memorize. Hand a ball to the first child that can recite it and tell him to toss the ball to another kid. That child then recites the verse and tosses it to someone else. Continue the game until everyone has recited the Bible verse.

    One at a Time

    • Choose a verse and assign all the kids to memorize it. Identify the key words in the verse for them. Create a motion that is linked to each key word and teach it to the kids. For example, for the word "love," a child could arch his arms like a giant heart. Each kid says one word of the verse, and when a key word is said, the child does the motion with his body. You could also do the same game without the motions if your time is limited or the motions create too much of a distraction.
