Instructions

    • 1

Type your name, address, telephone number and email address at the top center of the page on separate lines. Highlight all of your contact information in bold. Your contact information should stand out from the rest of your resume because you want it to be memorable to your potential employer so they will contact you.

    • 2

Begin the next section with "Objective" and highlight it in bold. The objective is a phrase that tells your potential employer your short- and long-term career goals in a brief and concise way. An example of an outpatient coder's objective is: "To work in a healthcare setting as an electronic medical coder." Try to tailor the objective to each position you're applying for but make it generic enough that an employer may keep you in mind for other billing-related positions.

    • 3

Create your “Experience” section by listing the positions you have had, stressing their application in a medical or billing environment. Some examples of experience include working at an insurance company processing claims, performing receptionist and referral duties at a doctor's office or working in a medical provider's billing center coding databases and programs. List your work experience chronologically, from most recent to oldest. List the name of the employer, your job title, and the beginning and end dates of each position.

    • 4

Provide your "Education" information by listing any degrees or certificates you have acquired. Indicate the institution or facility you graduated from and the date of completion of the coursework.

    • 5

Complete your resume with the phrase: "References Available Upon Request." Provide your references on a separate sheet of paper and present it to a potential employer only when requested.
