The basic elements of a technical paper should include the title, the author's name and his affiliation, the abstract, body, acknowledgments, nomenclature, appendices and finally, the references.
The abstract (opening) of a technical paper should be 400 words or less. The purpose of your paper and the points to be discussed throughout should be introduced here and categorized as background, method, results and conclusions.
Headings that precisely follow your technical outline should logically divide your technical paper into sections. Headings are numbered, but the paragraphs in the body of each heading are not.
A technical paper should be concisely and simply written and follow a well-organized outline. Highly technical terms should be explained with easily understandable definitions. Illustrations and tables should be included for visual clarity but used sparingly.
A list of original references used in researching your technical paper should be included at the end in the order in which they were first brought up in the body of your paper.
