How to Write APA Essays

The American Psychological Association (APA) style is the most commonly used writing style in the social sciences. Learning how to write in APA style is essential throughout many academic careers aside from the social sciences. Proper APA documents are formatted with appropriate in-text citations and a reference page for establishing the credibility of the essay and the author.

Instructions

    • 1

Indent the essay with 1-inch margins on all sides.

    • 2

Double-space the text of the entire essay.

    • 3

Number the essay pages in continuous order in the upper right corner.

    • 4

Type a running head at the top left of the title page in all caps. The running head is the title of the essay in fewer than 50 characters. For example "Running head: EFFECT OF VIDEOGAMES ON TEENAGERS." The full title of the essay should be centered on the title page with the student's name, institution and city and state below it.

    • 5

Create the essay's abstract on a blank page with "Abstract" in the center of the first line and the text typed in a single-paragraph block format below it.

    • 6

Insert the full title of the essay on the first page and begin the introduction double-spaced below the title.

    • 7

Center the topic heading of each section in boldface and title case. If using subtopics, align the second heading to the left, also in boldface and title case. Capitalize formal names and words four letters or longer in headings, titles and subtitles.

    • 8

Indent each paragraph 1/2 inch and write the essay.

    • 9

Reference sources in-text by including the author's last name and year of publication in parentheses at the end of the sentence. For instance: (Jack, 2005). For sentences already containing the referenced author's name, cite only the publication year in parentheses after the author's name.

    • 10

Create a page break and center the word "References" on the first line. Indent the first line of each reference with 1/2 inch hanging indents. Cite books by the author's last and first name, publication date, publication title, edition, publication location and publisher name. For example: Strunk, W., Jr., & White, E. B. (1979). The elements of style (3rd ed.). New York: Macmillan.
