How to Document a URL With No Author in MLA Format

Modern Language Association (MLA) style is commonly used to write and format papers in academic and professional settings. Documenting a URL relates to references found in the bibliography or works cited page. Any source that is directly used or that influenced the writer should be included in the works cited page.

Instructions

    • 1

Begin the works cited on a new page. Use the same MLA format as in the rest of the paper, including the margin size, last name and page numbers. Title the page "Works Cited" without italics or quotation marks.

    • 2

Alphabetize sources by the author's last name. When the author is not given, use the first letter of the title of the article. Write the title of the article in quotation marks. Write the title of the website in italics.

    • 3

Include any version numbers, revision, posting or issue dates. If there are no publication dates, write n.d. in italics. Add the name of the publisher; if the name of the publisher doesn't appear, write n.p. in italics. Separate each new addition to the citation with a period.

    • 4

Write the medium of publication. For a website, title it "Web," without quotations. Add the date you first accessed the material in the sequence: date month. year.

    • 5

If asked for by the instructor, include website URLs at the end of the citation in angle brackets and end with a period. Add a new line for long URLs at the slashes.
