The Certificate of Secondary Education (CSE) was an academic qualification awarded in England, Wales and Northern Ireland from 1965 until 1988, when it was replaced by the General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE). The CSE was introduced as a less demanding alternative to the General Certificate of Education (GCE) Ordinary Level, and was typically taken by pupils who were not expected to achieve the higher grades in the GCE.
