Uses of a Still Picture in the Classroom

Still pictures can be actively used for creating an interactive lecture session. According to Future of Math website, you can acquire still images from the Internet from a search engine such as Google Images, Yahoo or Bing. Students can use these pictures to analyze various concepts and test their knowledge with real world images.
  1. Science and Math concepts

    • Use a digital camera to capture real world examples of mathematical concepts such as parallel lines (for instance, power lines or sidewalk cracks), shapes, geometric solids and right angles. Each week, you can show students a photograph in which you find a mathematical concept evident. Then, get the students to research and figure out what the concept is. Each student can then analyze the concept and write a short description. You can also take pictures of different types of clouds, trees, plants, soil and other things to get students to analyze each concept.

    Picture Story

    • Many teachers find "picture stories" a useful tool for initiating speaking or writing activities. Find a meaningful still picture or a photograph and show it to your students. Ask the students to make up stories about it and tell them out loud to everybody else in the class. Depending on the size of the class, you can create several groups or pairs for this activity. This way, it can be an excellent way to get the students to actively participate in a class discussion.

    American Sign Language (ASL)

    • You can get photos of standard sign language, for example, numbers and alphabets. Teaching ASL is beneficial for the students as it teaches them to communicate with the deaf community in the United States and English-speaking parts of Canada. By using still pictures, you can teach and then test various aspects of ASL.

    Geography

    • Pictures of various landmarks from around the world can help test the students' geography knowledge, for instance, Sydney Opera House in Australia, Piazza Navona in Italy or Alhambra in Spain. This is particularly beneficial if you have been teaching about a particular country in the class and need to test the students' knowledge of that country.
