How to Stop a Drinking Fountain from Splashing

A water fountain that has been properly maintained should not have a large amount of water splashing out of it, which can cause a safety hazard. There are three main causes of excess splashing, all of which can be quickly addressed with a few basic tools. Some splashing is inevitable, but setting the water level to your preference, checking for levelness and adjusting the bubbler stream should help control the water.

Instructions

Remove the front panel from the drinking fountain. Use the appropriate screwdriver for the particular type of drinking fountain. Check the internal connections for water leaks.

    • 2

Place a cup or a similar object over the streaming section of the fountain. Press down on the "Push" button gradually until you get a steady stream of water. Locate the water adjustment screw, which will be beneath the valve that controls the water flow.

    • 3

Adjust the water flow. Turn the screwdriver clockwise to increase the water flow and counterclockwise to decrease the water flow until you have achieved a level that keeps splashing to a minimum. It helps to have one person turn the screwdriver and one monitor the flow of water, but this job can also be done by one person. Replace the front cover once you have reached the desired level of water pressure.

Check to see if the fountain is level. Use shims as needed to bring the unit to a level position.

Adjust the bubbler nozzle. The nozzle at the end of the drinking faucet can be tilted back and forth slightly, reducing spatter.
