How to Remove Salt From Cooked Pork

Salt is often added to pork dishes for flavor enhancement and as a method of preservation. However tasty the meat may be, it contains high levels of sodium. A cup of salt pork contains 1636.6mg of sodium which is about 917 calories. This is highly unhealthy, but the salt can be removed from the pork during its preparation. People on a low-sodium diet should avoid eating salted pork.

Instructions

Slice the pork into horizontal thin stripes with a sharp knife to increase its surface area. Fill a saucepan with water and place the cut pork pieces into the water. Replace the lid and heat the water. This allows the excess fat to be extracted from the pork. The seasonings and the grease present in the cooked pork are also extracted and the salt in the cooked pork dissolves in the boiling water.

Turn off the flame when the water starts to boil. Allow the pork to remain in the hot water for three to five minutes. This facilitates the dissolution of the excess salt still present in the pork. The fat and grease forms a layer on the surface of the water. Remove the pork from the pan and discard the water.

    • 3

Rinse the pork in cold water to remove the fat and seasonings still present on the surface of the pork. Place the pork on a tray and allow it to dry. Put the pork in an oven at a low temperature of about 50 degrees Fahrenheit for about five minutes to dry off the water.

Use the desalinated pork in a pork meal. You can fry or stew the pork. Make use of a pork recipe such as Poutine Râpée which uses desalinated pork meat.
