Schools in Waxhaw, North Carolina

Waxhaw is a small town in Union county, North Carolina. It is named after the indigenous Native American tribe that has roots in that region. The town has a population of about 3,000. Despite having a small population, it has a well developed education infrastructure. The town has three public high schools.
  1. Marvin Ridge High School

    • Marvin Ridge High School has 847 students grades 9 to 12 classes. In January 2011, Bill Cook was the principal and the assistant principals were Marie Brickman, Kim Fisenne and Rob Hutton. The school has 40 active clubs and athletics programs, including cheerleading, cross country, golf, football, baseball, basketball and volleyball. It is the only approved International Baccalaureate World School (IB) in Union County.

    Waxhaw Elementary School

    • Waxhaw Elementary School, which had 700 students as of February 2011, has classes from pre-kindergarten to fifth grade. The school has a volunteer system under which various people offer free service in activities such as cooking for students and gardening. The school has a counseling program which aims at helping students overcome their personal and academic challenges. The program offers individual and group counseling.

    Cuthbertson High School

    • Cuthbertson High School was opened in August 2009. The principal in January 2011 was Rob Jackson and the assistant principals were Randy Boob, Kim Warr and Beverly Pennington. The school has 665 students and runs from grade 9 to 12. The school's athletics include baseball, basketball and cheerleading. There is also golf and cross country. The school was the first school in Union County to earn the state's highest academic recognition, "NC Honor School of Excellence" in its first year of operation.

    South Providence High School

    • South Providence High School combines middle school and high school. It is an alternative school which was opened in 1994. The public school has 129 students in grades 6 to12. The student to teacher ratio is 12 to one. Barry Ross was the principal in January 2011 and the assistant principals were Dan Edwards and Beverly Pennington. The school's clubs include half court club, adventure club and dance club.
