Art Schools in Brattleboro, Vermont

Brattleboro, Vermont, is a town at the junction of the West and Connecticut rivers in Windham County, about a two hour drive from the state's capital, Montpelier. The town is home to several performing arts venues including the Brattleboro Museum & Art Center, the Latchis Theater and the Hooker-Dunham Theater. With so many places catering to the arts, it's no surprise that you'll find several schools in Brattleboro offering classes in different forms of art.
  1. Visual Arts

    • River Gallery School of Art started offering after-school classes for children in 1976 and has expanded to including art classes for adults. The school offers a children's class for painting, drawing and sculpture and another for figure drawing, printmaking, sequencing, painting, sculpture or assemblage. Some of the art classes for adults include illustration, life drawing, portraiture and print making. Classes are based on the winter/spring and summer semesters, and range from several days to 15 weeks, depending on the class. Some classes provide art materials and others do not.

    Theater

    • Kids starting as young as four years old can take classes in the New England Youth Theatre. Some of the classes offered include "Drama and Dress Up" for kids ages 4 and 5 and improv classes for kids ages 10 to 16. Other classes offered are theater design and production and writing and performing your own monologue. Classes range for one to two-and-a-half hours. The fee for each class varies and each class lasts for eight weeks. One- to two-week summer programs are offered for kids ages 4 to 19. The classes are divided by age group.

    Photography

    • The Insight Photography Project teaches photography to youth ages 11 to 18. The classes consist of introductory, intermediate and advanced levels and include classes such as digital photography, introduction to black and white and documentary photography. All materials for every class are provided including a camera, film, paper, chemicals and other supplies that are needed. The Insight Photography Project uses a scaling fee based on a student's annual household income; furthermore, students may pay in installments.

    Dance

    • Brattleboro School of Dance offers classes for children and adults during the fall/winter, spring and summer semesters. Classes offered include toddlers' movement, children's break dance, stretch and strength, ballroom dancing, ballet, hip hop, jazz and tap. Some classes are divided into beginner, intermediate and advanced levels. The classes range from 15 to 16 classes once a week and last for 30 minutes to one hour. A registration fee applies in addition to the cost of the class.

    Music

    • Students of all ages and abilities are welcome to take classes in the Brattleboro Music Center's Music School. The school offers individual lessons and classes in 15 instruments and voice. Some of the classes offered are a fiddle youth class, musicianship skills for singers and a basic beginning violin class for adults. Classes for children with disabilities are offered. The Vermont Jazz Center offers year-round programs for all ages. Some of the classes offered are a Latin jazz ensemble, women's swing vocal ensemble and private instrumental instruction.
