Ten Reasons to Go to Your High School Reunion

Going to a high school reunion can be a fun and exciting but also worrisome if some of your high school experiences were less than stellar. If the idea of having to walking through those locker-filled halls again makes you cringe slightly, it's important to remember there can be many good reasons for going to a reunion and several possible positive outcomes.
  1. Rekindle Old Friendships

    • Rekindling old friendships is the most obvious reason to attend a high school reunion. Attendees will be eager to see their old friends and perhaps talk to people they were too shy or too busy to talk to before. Reminiscing on old high school experiences can be a fun way to spend one evening.

    Get a Reality Check

    • People tend to talk, post or blog about only positive things in their lives. Going to a high school reunion can show you that other people in your class have been divorced, or gained weight or lost their job and just like yours, no one's life is perfect.

    Set a Goal

    • If you have gained weight or have been slacking on trying to find the right job, the idea of a high school reunion is a great motivator. The invitations are typically sent several months in advance so that gives you plenty of time to work on something in your life that's been bothering you.

    Forgive and Forget

    • If any longstanding grudges or rivalries still linger after high school, use the reunion to get past them. It can be very freeing to forgive someone or move past a hurt that time may have never fully healed.

    New Contacts

    • You may not have known that your old friend from the basketball team now has a job at the same company you've had your eye on. Use your high school reunion to make new business contacts and promote yourself.

    The Music

    • When attending a 10- or 20-year reunion, the DJ will typically play the music popular the year you graduated. What fun it would be to dance to music you used to love with people you used to know for a night.

    The Dress

    • While some people may cringe at the idea of finding something to wear to a reunion, it can be fun and ego-boosting to spend a night in a nice outfit you wouldn't normally wear. Use your reunion as an excuse to buy something nice for yourself and actually wear it.

    You Can Be Yourself

    • There's no need to lie about your age or where you came from at a high school reunion. Everyone is in the same boat. So if you are feeling self conscious about your age, just remember, so is every other person there.

    Humor the Committee

    • People on the reunion committee spent weeks preparing for this event just in the hopes that everyone will have a good time. The more people that show up, including you, the more appreciated they feel for their efforts.

    Live Out Fantasies

    • If there was one thing you wanted to do in high school you never did -- like dance with the special girl or run the length of the football field at night -- use your high school reunion to live out that dream. You may feel it's small or silly, but you should never pass up a second chance.
