If you took a GED test online, any diploma received as a result is fraudulent. The GED is a proctored seven-hour test which can only be completed in person at testing centers recognized by the American Council for Education. Its sections are based on content covered in formal high school curricula and always include reading, writing, mathematics, science and social studies. If this does not sound like the test you completed, contact the American Council for Education to determine whether it is associated with your testing center.
If you completed an online high school program, call the school or check its website for the school's accreditation information. If the school claims to be accredited by one of six regional agencies accredited by the National Education Association, call the appropriate organization to confirm.
If the school claims to be accredited by an association outside of NEA, contact the organization to confirm. However, realize that accreditation mills are on the rise just just as diploma mills are, and these accrediting organizations are not always legitimate.
For schools claiming accreditation outside of NEA, and for schools without accreditation, contact a local college or business to find out if it accepts diplomas awarded by your institution.
