Life experience degrees are usually advertised either by online advertising or by email spam. Companies selling those degrees usually register domain names which are similar to the ones used by legitimate academic institutions such as universities or colleges. According to those companies, a life experience degree allows you to use your work or personal life experience in order to qualify for a BA, MA, or even sometimes, a Ph.D.
Getting such a degree is, of course, extremely easy. Usually, a website selling such a degree will simply ask you a few basic questions about your work or life experience. Then it will ask you to pay a certain sum of money in order to receive your life experience degree. It is worth noting that, since the goal of such a website is to sell as many diplomas or degrees as possible, the validity of the claims made by the applicants is not checked. Therefore, someone could pretend to have an 8-year experience in engineering and get a corresponding degree, even if that person has never worked in that field.
Since getting a life experience degree is simply a matter of paying for it, no books or learning materials are needed. However, the cost of the degree in itself can be prohibitive, especially given its dubious academic value. Life experience degrees can cost between $300 and $2,500, depending on the company selling the degrees and on the type of degree chosen. A Ph.D. is, for example, much more expensive than a simple BA.
Most websites selling life experience degrees claim to have received an accreditation from various organizations with official-sounding names. However, most of those accrediting organizations are simply set up by the websites selling life experience degrees in order to give them the appearance of real academic institutions. If you are in doubt about the accreditation of an academic institution, contact your regional Commission on Higher Education.
