How to Learn English in Houston

Because Texas is a border state, it tends to attract many immigrants who struggle to learn English. Houston offers a wide array of tools for non-English speaking people, which include English as a Second Language (ESL) classes, English tutors and volunteer instructors. Choose the best option and begin to learn English in Houston.

Enroll in an English as a Second Language (ESL) class that suits your particular requirements. For example, ESL Houston offers group intensive, semi-intensive and exploratory courses in English. Check out their Business English program as well as their elective classes on American culture and current events. Go to the University of St. Thomas, which is located in Houston's Museum District, and visit ESL Houston's offices. Speak to an administrator about their curriculum. Note that their courses range in price from $1,600 to $7,000, depending on the number of sessions and hours per session. These prices do not include the application fee, textbooks or use of technology. Visit another ESL provider, Crossing Borders, which provides instruction for toddlers, children, teens and adults. Ask to sit in on an English class or one of their interactive activities to "live" English, ranging from dance to cooking.

Attend free ESL classes offered by many of Houston's churches. For example, religious institutions that provide free English language classes are St. Philip's United Methodist Church, First Baptist Church Missions Training Center and the West University Baptist Church. Take their beginner classes, which are typically scheduled for an hour and conducted several times a week. Be aware that you will have to foot the cost of textbooks and supplemental materials.

Call the public schools and libraries to find out where they hold free English classes. Ask the Houston Public Library about which branches conduct ESL classes, and visit the branch nearest to your home. Contact the Harris County Public Library to find out when their ESL classes are scheduled.

Investigate the free ESL classes given by volunteer and community organizations. Visit the Spring Branch ISD Parent Center, which also offers instruction on citizenship, parenting and computer skills, to find out about their ESL courses. Attend ESL classes held on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday nights at The Oaks on Bissonnet YMCA Community Center.

Research companies that provide English language tutors who can travel to you if you are pressed for time or have a complicated schedule. For example, Listen & Learn USA will send a tutor to your home or office, furnish you with materials and tailor the curriculum to your needs. Ask for the type of instruction you require, such as conversational English or English for business executives.
