Research English as a Second Language (ESL) classes in your area. In Pittsburgh, universities such as the University of Pittsburgh, Duquesne University and Point Park University offer ESL classes to students. Local community colleges may also offer these courses. While convenient for students, these ESL classes are fee based and may not be affordable for everyone.
Look for free classes. Some free ESL courses offered in the Pittsburgh area include the Greater Pittsburgh Literacy Council, Focus on Renewal and The International Women's Association of Pittsburgh (IWAP).
Contact the instructor at any of the classes you are interested in. This is your opportunity to ask questions and find out more about the class, the material that will be covered, what levels (beginner, intermediate or advanced) are taught and the instructor.
Sign up for the class that best fits your needs. Your chosen ESL class should reflect your budget, your schedule and your current skill level with the language.
Complete any assignments your teacher assigns in your ESL class.
Purchase a computer program such as Rosetta Stone to help you learn. These programs can be used to supplement a formal ESL course, or they can allow you to learn at your own pace from your own home.
Practice. Immersing yourself in the language will help you learn more quickly and, will improve your memory too. If you don't have someone at home to practice with, there are places in Pittsburgh, such as the Tango Café, that provide the chance to practice conversing with native English speakers.
