Distance Learning Dyslexia Courses

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, about 15 to 20 percent of American students have dyslexia. Another shocking fact is that less than a third of these children are receiving services for their reading disability. Many teachers and parents lack training to help children with dyslexia. Online distance learning courses can help instructors learn the skills needed to help this population be better readers and successful students.
  1. Dyslexia Teacher and Direct Learning

    • The Dyslexia Certificate Course offers online courses for teachers, teaching assistants and even parents who wish to homeschool or help their dyslexic child with homework. This site offers multimedia instruction geared towards dyslexia and its causes, along with strategies for learning and how to teach and assess those strategies, with certified and non-certified courses. Instructors learn how to help children overcome obstacles in math, reading, spelling and comprehension. Parents learn how to deal with homework and help children with math and technology.

    Neuhas Education Center

    • Neuhas provides teachers with training for "professional development in research-based methods of literacy instruction." Online classes are self-paced and run for about two weeks. Language Enrichment classes run for about six weeks. Check listings for which classes are being offered and the length of each one. Assessments include online quizzes at the end of each lesson. Neuhas has courses for both teachers and parents with dyslexic children.

    The Center for Dyslexia

    • The Center for Dyslexia offers an 18-credit-hour graduate certificate program through Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU). One of the dyslexic study courses must be taken on campus. All others are available online. Content is research based and defines dyslexia, aids in identification, and provides the strategies for effective intervention. Applicants must have a teaching license or certification, plus three years of work experience in K-12. To apply, go through the MTSU website for the admission process. Send transcripts, a letter of interest and letters of recommendation from principal or supervisors to:
