Distance Learning Surveying Courses

Prospective students in the field of surveying can find bachelor's degrees, certificates or short courses through certain colleges for distance learning. Available short courses cover a wide range of subjects and are designed to suit the professional needs of a qualified surveyor or surveying organization. Both land- and marine-specific surveying programs are available for distance learning. Courses are taught using CDs, DVDs, video or audio streaming and home coursework.
  1. Old Dominion University

    • The Old Dominion University offers a distance learning Bachelor of Science in Engineering Technology in Surveying and Technology. The degree is hosted at 50 locations and is designed for students who already have an Associate in Applied Science degree. The course is completed through online work and video streaming. The distance learning method takes three years for degree completion, depending on the course load taken. Taped lectures are available for students who miss lectures due to travel or illness.

    Metropolitan State College of Denver

    • Aimed at surveying professionals who wish to improve their skills, the Metropolitan State College of Denver offers individual online courses. These are priced individually and take less than six months to complete. Each course costs from $402 to $804 as of February 2011. Most are in DVD form and one, called "Technical Writing for Surveyors and Engineers," is performed online. The courses take year-round enrollment and the materials are sent to the surveyor's home or workplace.

    Maritime College - State University of New York

    • For prospective students interested in marine surveying, the State University of New York offers online certificates. The certificate specializations include Marine Hull Surveying, Marine Cargo Surveying, Yacht Damage Surveying, Heavy Weather Marine Surveying, Refrigerated Cargo Surveying and Hatch Covers and Ultrasonic Testing Surveying. The certificates take from four to eight weeks to complete. Course materials are provided and students use video, audio and software presentations along with group discussions as part of the course. Each certificate gives students 40 contact hours of training. These contact hours can be converted into Continuing Education Units (CEUs) for further education credits in certain institutions.

    Auburn University

    • Auburn University's distance learning program offers career development courses for professional surveyors. The courses are delivered to students' homes in CD or download format. Courses cover practical aspects of surveying, use of advanced equipment and historical or legal aspects of surveying. Price depends on whether an individual or organization wishes to purchase the training material but individual courses range from $150 to $964 as of February 2011. The credit hours for each course can be converted into CEUs for further study.
