How to Type Spanish Accents Using the Number Pad

Accents are a crucial but often-neglected part of correctly written Spanish, affecting pronunciation, tense and word meanings. For example --- "amo" means "I love" while "amó" means "he/she/it loved." Many students never learn how to implement these accents on a PC properly, as they are not immediately obvious. Spanish accents can be added using the numeric keypad and the "Alt" key.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn on "Num Lock" on your keyboard by pressing the "Num Lock" button once. This enables the numeric keypad to be used. A light shows that Num Lock is activated.

    • 2

Hold down the "Alt" key. The "Alt" key is usually located on the bottom left of your keyboard. Note that holding the "Alf Gr" (Alt Grid) key will not work.

    • 3

Type in the three-digit code to create your Spanish character. Remember to keep pressing "Alt" when typing in the code. For example, pressing and holding "Alt" and "181" creates the character "Á."

    • 4

Release "Alt" to show your accented Spanish character. Remember that you need to use a different code for different cases. For example, "Alt" then "160" creates "á" (lower case).
