How to Store Newspaper Articles

Newspaper articles provide an historical insight into people, places and events. These historical records need to be preserved so that future generations will be able to better understand life as it used to be. Newspapers were printed on paper made from cotton rag fiber prior to the mid-1800s. Consequently, newspapers from that era have withstood the test of time and, if handled properly, will continue to do so for the foreseeable future. Since then, however, newspapers are printed on paper made from ground wood fibers and the life expectancy is drastically reduced.

Instructions

    • 1

Carefully cut out the newspaper article. Make sure the date and the publication name are included as this information is essential for historical purposes. Without the information it is easy to forget the date or where the newspaper article was published.

    • 2

Make scrapbooks of newspaper articles. Invest in acid-free paper and PVC glue if you want your collection of newspaper articles to last.

    • 3

Protect your newspaper articles in plastic sleeves in a binder if you want to refer to them frequently. The plastic covers will help preserve the newsprint and will protect it against the elements, including fingers, that can cause it to disintegrate.

    • 4

Keep your file of newspaper articles away from excessive dryness and heat. Low humidity and excessive heat cause newsprint to deteriorate very quickly. Dampness, light and airborne pollutants are also factors that can reduce the life expectancy of newsprint.

    • 5

Find sturdy cardboard boxes that will keep airborne pollutants, dust, and light away from your newspaper articles. Storing newspaper articles in cardboard boxes that protect them from the elements means your collection will last longer and be easier to move around.

    • 6

Locate a storage area for the boxes that is not too hot or too dry. Attics, basements and garages may not be the best places to store newspaper articles. Keep the optimum conditions in mind when choosing a storage space.

    • 7

Check your newspaper articles from time to time to make sure they are not deteriorating too quickly. If that is happening, find a new storage place.
