In the metric system, a cubic centimeter is a measurement of volume. The total area of a cubic centimeter is 1 cm x 1 cm x 1 cm. Centimeters are generally used express distance or size rather than volume. Volume is usually first measured in centimeters and then later converted to liters. The base units of a cubic meter are 1,000 times larger than the base units of a liter. For example, a cubic meter is exactly 1,000 times the volume of a metric liter, and a cubic centimeter is equivalent to a milliliter.

1
Measure out the volume of the area with the measuring tape. Measure the height, width and depth in centimeters. Write down the results as you go.
-
2
Use your calculator to multiply the height of the area, the width and the depth measurements all together. Write down the result. This is the area expressed in cubic centimeters.

Write down the number of cubic centimeters. Convert the cubic centimeters into milliliters by simply changing the units from c^3 to milliliters. These two units are exactly equal and completely interchangeable.
