How to Transition Into a Law Practice Program

The early years of practice in a work experience shape and test the ethical values of a beginning lawyer far more than the limited practice available in law school. The transit from law school to the practice of law determines the foundation of the beginner lawyer and his ensuing mode of practice. Different bar associations offer Transition into Law Practice Programs to beginning lawyers. The main goal is to provide professional guidance to beginning lawyers who are newly admitted to the practice of law.

Instructions

    • 1

Enroll in the Transition into Law Practice Program (TILPP). If you are a judicial clerk, compliance with the program is deferred until completion of clerkship. If you are an employee in a law firm or legal organization, a mentor will be assigned to you. He will be nominated through consultation with your employer. A sole practitioner can nominate her own mentor.

    • 2

Complete your compliance checklist and all enrollment requirement details. Do these within three months of registration to the bar. The compliance checklist form requires your name, your mentor's name and a mentor volunteer form.

    • 3

Follow the activities set by the mentoring plan. The plan seeks to govern the responsibilities of both you and your mentor. These activities include: introduction to the legal community, introduction to the community at large, office management, discussions on how to work with your client, mandatory advocacy experiences, additional litigation experiences and obligations of a public defender to others. These activities may vary depending on your program.

    • 4

Return the original copy of the mentor form after completing 12 months of mentorship. Your mentor has to sign the certificate to prove that you have satisfactorily completed the mentorship plan to which he was committed.

    • 5

Attend the required Continuing Legal Education (CLE) programs. CLE is designed to enhance its members' professional competence as lawyers. Active lawyers are required to keep current on the law by attending a minimum of 12 hours of education each year. Beginning lawyers should contact their supervisors or the Institute of Continuing Legal Education for the dates, times and locations of the required CLE programs.
