How to Write to Memorize

Writing to memorize is a technique which may help you learn new material. It can be used to learn a new language, learn new technical terms for a class, or to learn other types of information. By writing you are engaging more of your body in the learning process and therefore making it easier to recall the information.

Instructions

    • 1

Write slowly the information you want to learn. For instance, if you are learning Spanish and want to learn how to conjugate the verbs, start with the verbs that you want to learn like hablar (meaning to speak) and conjugate it according to its different forms. Write the words in a column, or on a line or some other organized way. Then say the words to yourself as you read them, starting from the "yo" (I) form to the "ustedes" (they) form. Practice this a few times over the next several days to learn the word forms. Use the forms in a sentence.

Copy the words of a text of dialogue which you may need to learn for drama class. Again, engaging more of your body in to the work of memorizing may help you retain the information. Read through the dialogue first and then write it down slowly, saying the words as you write. Do this multiple times until you feel you have the material memorized.

    • 3

Read through a poem or short piece of prose which you may have to learn for English class. Write down this poem or prose, saying each line to yourself as you read it. Repeat this process until you feel comfortable with the material. Repeat the poem or story excerpt to yourself. Try to remember how the words looked on the page if you have trouble remembering some parts of the writing.
