How to Learn to Read & Write Spanish

Learning Spanish is as easy as a student wants it to be. It requires a time-consuming commitment to practicing vocabulary and pronunciation, memorizing grammar rules, reading sentences and listening to the language in order to truly learn. If a student is willing to put forth the time and effort, he may find that the results of his commitment are extremely rewarding. A student must be willing to begin with the very basics of Spanish and proceed to more advanced elements as he achieves a foundation in his new language of choice.

      Learn the alphabet, the fundamentals for any language.

      Use the Internet or a Spanish-English dictionary to look up the pronunciations of the Spanish alphabet. Practice saying the alphabet and learn the letters that are not in the English alphabet. The Spanish alphabet includes all of the standard English alphabet letters plus a few extras. Memorize the alphabet.

      Make note cards of key phrases to begin learning basic Spanish.

      Study the beginning Spanish textbook to learn key phrases that are necessary in everyday vernacular, such as "hello," "goodbye," "my name is" and "how are you." Write these phrases on note cards with the Spanish on one side and the English on the other, and memorize them.

      Look up the pronunciation of Spanish words in a Spanish dictionary.

      Continue to add more phrases to new note cards as the old phrases become familiar. Look up words or phrases that seem difficult to pronounce in a Spanish-English or English-Spanish dictionary in order to read the pronunciation key next to the words.

      Use a textbook to highlight grammar and punctuation rules.

      Read the beginning Spanish textbook to learn the grammar rules of the Spanish language, including conjugations of verbs, pronoun usage and punctuation.

      Add more words and phrases to add more Spanish knowledge.

      Add more and more words, phrases, and verbs to the note card stack and memorization repertoire, increasing the amount of Spanish knowledge learned.
