Obtain the reader's manual for specific electric devices such as a toaster or washing machine. If you do not own the owner's manual, contact the manufacturer to obtain a copy. Locate the specification sheet in the manual that contains the device's electronic information.
Locate the device's voltage rating as well as current rating. The current rating is generally measuring in amperes. Record the values on a separate notepad.
Multiply the value for the device's voltage rating by the current rating. Record the value on your notepad. This is the number of watts produced by the device.
Obtain the power factor of the device. Although this value is not generally supplied with the product information, it is usually between 60 and 95 percent. This means there may be a slight inaccuracy in the results. However, check your owner's manual to see if the power factor is included. If it is not supplied, use a power factor of 85 percent.
Multiply the value in watts by the value obtained for the power factor, if it is included. If not, multiply the watts value by 85 percent. Divide the final result by 1,000 to obtain the number of kilowatts produced.
