How to Clean the Screen of an Herb Grinder

An herb grinder is aptly named. Whether you are grinding basil for Italian food or marjoram for a beef stew, the grinder will crush and tear apart different delicious herbs, making leftover pieces smaller and smaller. These bits of herbs eventually pass through the delicate screen used to collect the grindings and settle in a small, separate pollen case on the other side of the screen. This screen will eventually become clogged and will require maintenance. Even with regular maintenance, pollen will remain inside the grinder, eventually drying and caking together. This will cause your grinder to stick together more than slide back and forth easily while grinding.

Instructions

  1. Disassembling Your Herb Grinder

    • 1

Unscrew the two halves of the herb grinder. The upper half is the grinder, and the lower half is the collection compartment made up of the screen and pollen case.

    • 2

Separate the top and bottom parts of the grinder. Set them aside for later cleaning.

    • 3

Unscrew the bottom compartment of the pollen case and save the contents if desired. Set aside the case bottom with the grinder portion for later cleaning.

    Monthly Maintenance

    • 4

Grip the screen by the sides of the case. Scoop up any visible pollen with a playing card and empty it into a separate container if you are planning to keep it.

    • 5

Scrub the screen gently with a clean, unused toothbrush until it is clear. Make sure that the bristles are clearing the crevasses in the screen. Collect falling pollen in a separate container if you are planning to keep it.

    • 6

Brush and clean the inside parts of the grinder and the top and bottom lids. Collect the excess pollen if desired.

    Yearly Maintenance

    • 7

Gather a 1000 ml glass beaker, a bottle of at least 90 percent isopropyl alcohol and your grinder.

    • 8

Disassemble the grinder and clean it as instructed in Section 2. Place all of the brushed pieces into the beaker.

    • 9

Pour alcohol over the grinder components until they are covered. Soak the pieces for five to 10 minutes.

    • 10

Clean all parts of the grinder with the toothbrush until clean. Brush the screen gently.

    • 11

Rinse all of the grinder parts under hot water and then dab them gently with a towel. Allow all of the components to air dry completely before reassembling the grinder.
