Propane Checklist

Propane is a highly combustible gas, so you must exercise common sense regarding its use. A checklist should include things to remember such as keeping tanks away from extreme heat and inspecting them daily for any issues. Make sure you handle the equipment properly according to its design, and always be protective of yourself and others around the gas.
  1. Make Sure There's No Fire Nearby

    • Flame and extreme heat must be kept away from propane containers because the gas is highly combustible. If a propane tank has become cold or frozen, never use flames to warm it up. You can utilize an item called a powerblanket to protect propane tanks from the effects of the cold. All sources of flame should be checked that they are away from the propane equipment. Never leave a lit propane torch unattended.

Inspect for Position, Leaks and Ventilation

    • Next on your checklist, do a thorough, daily inspection of all propane equipment. Always secure cylinders in an upright position and level so they don't tip over. They should not be on their sides or upside down at any time. Propane torches should not be ignited if you can smell the propane. If this happens, close all valves and check all of your equipment for any leaks. Because propane is heavier than air, it can sometimes build up in lower areas. Inspect any low areas near or around the tanks and ventilate the area if necessary.

    Valves

    • Be careful with the different kinds of tanks. Compatibility is key when working with propane. This means you have to use vapor equipment on propane units that have vapor withdrawal valves, and you have to use liquid equipment on those tanks designed for liquid withdrawal. Don't invert any vapor cylinders to get liquid out of the tank. Protect the valves by not lifting the tanks and using them as a handle.

    Wear Protection

    • Always wear gloves around propane tanks, and long-sleeved shirts and long pants and boots. Covering your skin reasonably well is good sense around this combustible element. You should also have a fire extinquisher handy for any small fires if they occur.
