How to Properly Handle Propane Tanks

Propane gas is stored in compressed liquid form and is used for cooking and heating in the home, or for industrial use. Propane tanks come in a wide range of shapes and sizes, and can be portable or stationary. Due to propane's volatile nature, extra caution is required when handling propane tanks to avoid fire hazards.

Instructions

    • 1

Close the gas cylinder valve whenever changing or re-locating a portable propane tank.

    • 2

Disconnect the hose or pipe from the tank nozzle, carefully making sure not to puncture or damage it in any way. Lift the tank with both hands. Get help if the tank is too big for you to carry by yourself.

    • 3

Secure the tank firmly with straps, ropes or chains in the vehicle used to transport it to the refill station. Always place the tank in an upright position when transporting and storing it.

    • 4

Offload the gas cylinder immediately when you reach the filling station. Check around the tank for dents and cracks before handing it over to the refilling personnel at the station. Let no one else but the authorized persons at the station handle your propane cylinder.

    • 5

Place the tank back onto the vehicle and firmly secure it again. Offload it immediately when you arrive home and always install (or store) propane tanks outdoors, in an upright position. Do not set it directly on the ground, but on a stage of non-flammable material such as metal or stone.

    • 6

Reconnect the hose or pipe to the nozzle firmly before opening the gas tank valve.
