A first aid kit is one of the most important pieces of equipment anyone should possess when venturing into areas or situations unknown. All first-aid basics, including bandages, ointments, scissors and antiseptics, should be at hand. There are large, sophisticated kits or smaller basic ones, any of which will work.
In survival situations, shelter is a basic requirement. You should seek a source of shelter before it is needed; i.e., before it gets cold and/or dark. While foliage and trees are common materials for constructing basic shelters, there may be debris or man-made objects that can be used or ready-made shelters, such as holes, alcoves, overhangs or caves. A source of warmth and cooking is important, so decide how to start a fire and what materials need to be collected for it before dark.
In survival situations, it is probable that food and water will be in short supply. In any survival situation where the resolution period is unknown, immediately ration the food and water supplies. Then seek any new sources of food and water. If you are in an area of snow or high precipitation, water collection will be simple. In dry areas, finding moisture is vital. Plants and shrubs can be a good source. In addition, plants, berries and leaves can be good food sources, as long as you know they are not toxic. Animals, insects, fish and birds are other food options.
Some basic equipment, such as rope, thread, tape, knives, tents, sleeping bags, warm clothing and sturdy footwear, can be worth their weight in gold in survival situations. In addition, communication equipment, such as radios, fully charged cell phones, spare batteries and emergency flares, are helpful. Matches and lighters are very important -- take care to keep them waterproof. Candles, a compass, fishing line and hooks, and water-purification tablets are also useful.
