Use questions to get the students to express why the clinical skills are needed and how they will be used. The best way to teach clinical skills is for the students to first recognize that the skills are necessary. Questioning the students about this is an interactive and effective way of doing so.
After performing the clinical skill in its entirety, ask questions of the individual students. Use the questioning to ensure that the students have an understanding of how the skill is performed. Further, allow students to ask questions as it may help them develop a firmer grasp of the subject.
Ask the students to walk through the use of the clinical skills in detail as it will help them remember the steps of the process. Question the students about any details given during the course of the walkthrough that were inaccurate. In addition, allow students to ask questions after a fellow student has been called on to explain the details of the skill.
