How to Put Shoelaces On

Lacing shoes does not require advanced degrees or exceptional intelligence. However, it has taken us hundreds of years to perfect the art of lacing them the strongest way possible, according to mathematician Burkhard Polster. The traditional criss-cross method is among the most effective ways to lace our shoes. This process is simple enough for a child to learn, but effective enough to keep a shoe attached to your foot in trying conditions.

Instructions

    • 1

Push your shoelace through the bottom eyelets on your shoes. Pull the lace through until the length of shoelace is even on both sides of the shoe.

    • 2

Take one end of the lace and push it through the next eyelet on the other side of shoe, crossing over the shoe as you do so.

    • 3

Push the other lace through the eyelet opposite the one that you just pushed the other lace through. This will effectively cross the laces over one another.

    • 4

Continue this process until you lace the shoes all the way to the top.

    • 5

Tie the shoes by crossing the laces and pushing one lace under the cross.

    • 6

Pull the ends of the lace outward until the knot is tight.

    • 7

Make a loop with the left lace and wrap the right lace around the bottom of the loop.

    • 8

Push the middle of the right lace through the resulting opening with your thumb, and pull the two away from each other to tighten the laces.
