Rainforest Insect Crafts

Children are often curious about the environment, animals and nature. In addition to developing creativity and motor skills, crafting about rainforest insects is a way to bring art to a science unit. Use recyclable materials, clay, egg cartons or any other item your creativity allows to create a collection of rainforest bugs, which you can later use to decorate the classroom.
  1. Paper Chain Caterpillar

    • Make a paper chain caterpillar with construction paper or old magazines. Cut 15 strips of paper, about 10 inches long and 1 inch wide. Glue the ends of a strip together to make a ring. Put another strip of paper through the ring and glue its ends, creating another ring. Repeat this process until you transform all your strips of paper into a chain. To make the caterpillar's head, cut a 2-inch-wide strip of paper and slide it through the last ring. Create antennae out of another piece of paper. Draw eyes and a mouth to complete the caterpillar.

    Butterfly Baggie

    • Buy clear plastic bags, pipe cleaners and colorful paper at a craft store. Cut the paper into small squares and put them inside the bag until it is about 60 percent full. Squeeze out the air and seal it tight. Wrap a pipe cleaner around the center of the bag, twisting it and twirling the ends to make the antennae.

    Clay Insects

    • Use colorful clay or playdough to create flies, butterflies, beetles or any other rainforest bug. Shape the head, wings and body separately, using different colors. Use toothpicks to fasten the body to the head. Apply pressure to attach the wings to the insect's back. Use wire to make the insects' legs and antennae. You can also make the eyes and mouth with colorful clay.

    Egg Carton Ant

    • You will need a strip of three cups from an egg carton, four pipe cleaners, glue, paint, scissors and a black marker. Paint the egg carton and allow it to dry. Make two holes on the top of the first cup and put both ends of the pipe cleaner to make the antennae. Make six holes on the sides of the egg cup, and put each pipe cleaner through two holes to make the legs. Bend the end of the pipe cleaners to make the feet. You can glue wiggly eyes or draw them on with a marker.
