How to Become Creative

When you attend a craft fair or flip through a crafting magazine, you may think it's impossible to become creative enough to design such projects. With some simple strategies, however, you'll not only cultivate your creativity, but develop a personal style as well.

Instructions

    • 1

Create a notebook featuring photos of projects that catch your eye whether you want to become more creative in scrapbooking, knitting, jewelry making, pottery or flower arranging. Determine what you like most about them such as their colors, textures, compositions or materials. Use the notes to discover what type of projects you want to focus on.

    • 2

Sign up for classes, workshops and weekend retreats to learn basic to advanced techniques. Just being around other crafters will bolster your creativity and inspire you to improve your skills. Once you master the basic skills, you'll be able to put your own spin on them.

    • 3

Use other crafters' ideas as springboards for your own. Although you should never copy a project directly without giving credit, you can take bits and pieces to adapt and incorporate in your own work. Find ideas in different creative channels. If you want to make your own greeting cards, for example, study scrapbook layouts to help you uncover new arrangements, accents and techniques you can use on a smaller scale.

    • 4

Find inspiration in nature, at the mall or when you're driving down the road to inspire new color combinations, textures and materials. If you're a scrapbooker, for example, watch billboards for creative titles for your layouts or look at fashion websites to discover different patterns and materials that you can use to generate textured backgrounds.

    • 5

Try not to compare your work with others as you become more proficient in the craft. There are no rules in crafting, so simply experiment, play and do what comes naturally to you. Be confident in your own style.
