To start, head to LiveMocha and register for your free account. When you're on the home page, simply click the "get started" button and fill in all the necessary information. You'll have to pick which language you'll want to learn. LiveMocha only has curriculum for some languages, but lists others because other users on the site may be able to help you in your efforts to learn the language you speak - all in exchange for lessons in your language of choice. Be sure to choose your skill level so LiveMocha can make sure you get lessons tailored to your level.
Once you've registered, an activation e-mail should be sent to the e-mail account you provided. Register your account and you're free to begin exploring the site. Create a profile so others can see what you're learning and what you hope to gain from your experience on LiveMocha. LiveMocha has quite a few features, so make sure you spend some time navigating around the site to make yourself comfortable with all it offers.
Once you're ready to get started, click on the "learn" tab at the top of the site. On this page you should see the course you signed up for when you registered. Each icon under your "current lessons" represents a different practice that will help you learn your chosen language. Clicking on the glasses will take you to sets up photos paired with a phrase to help you visually connect how to say things in that language. The document icon takes you to a lesson that requires you to read a phrase then match it with a picture that mimics the phrase. The ear icon takes you to a lesson where the phrase is said out loud, then you must match the photo with the phrase. The magnet icon takes you to a lesson where you must correctly put in order "magnet" words that indicate actions occurring in photos. The pencil icon takes you to a lesson that requires you to answer a question by using some of the techniques you learned in the previous lessons.
Each time you complete a level of lessons, you will be moved up to another, more difficult, intricate lesson. Eventually, when you're comfortable, you'll be able to interact with other LiveMocha users who are learning the same language as you, or who are trying to learn your native language. By chatting with other users you can improve your writing and reading skills and become more conversant in the language you want to learn.
You can also practice other aspects of the language you wish to learn by clicking on the "practice" button at the top of the site. This page features a variety of different lessons that you can work on by either writing or recording your answer. You can interact with other users by selecting a "dialog" partner who will be able to help you with your pronunciation of certain phrases.
If you are comfortable with what you've learned, you can also start helping others who are trying to learn your native language or the one you are trying to learn. By clicking the "share" button at the top of the site, you can submit lessons you've written and have others critique what you've learned, and, in return, you can help those users with their written lessons.
Once you've mastered your language, you can take a stab at a new one, or continue helping others who might need help.
