How to Calculate Standard Deviation Using Analysis ToolPak

The standard deviation is a statistic term that defines the midpoint in a set of numbers. It is the midpoint where 50 percent of the numbers fall below and 50 percent fall above. The standard deviation represents the deviation of observations about the mean or average. There are different ways to calculate the standard deviation. One of the simplest way to calculate the standard deviation is by utilizing the Analysis ToolPak.

The Analysis ToolPak is an add-in feature in Excel. The purpose of the Analysis ToolPak is to perform important statistical calculations with ease. The use of Analysis ToolPack does not require extensive calculations and special skills.

Instructions

      Open Excel 2007 and add the numbers in the first column. For example, add the numbers 20, 30, 40, 50, 60 and 70 in A2, A3, A4, A5, A6 and A7 cells of Excel.

      Click on the "A9" cell. This is the cell where you will calculate the standard deviation using Analysis ToolPak.

      Click on "Data" tab and "Data Analysis" found on the top right-hand side of the Excel spreadsheet. A window titled "Data Analysis" will pop open. Click on the "Descriptive Statistics." A window titled "Descriptive Statistics" will pop open. In the Input Range of window, select and drag from A2 to A7 cells. In the Output Range of Window, select A9 cell.

      Click on the "Summary Statistics" of the window. A check mark will appear right next to Summary Statistics. Click "OK."

      The standard deviation has been successfully calculated along with the mean, median and mode. In this example, the calculated value for the standard deviation is 18.708.
