How to Study English in Online Classes

Success in studying English in online classes requires the same amount of dedication you would give other classes--perhaps even more. You'll have to remain motivated to study and stay up on your work. Online English classes lack the interaction that you'd get in more traditional classes, so you really have to apply yourself to get the practice you need.

Instructions

    • 1

Look for a class that meets your needs. Whether you need to learn English for travel, for study or to pass your school's requirements, you should look for a class that contains the information that's most pertinent to your situation. Additionally, you should be sure to place yourself in the correct level--you don't want a class that's either too easy or too hard. To find a class, check out the extensive list of options at Dave's ESL Cafe, listed in Resources.

    • 2

Create a study timetable to keep you on task. You should plan blocks of study time throughout the week so that you can avoid cramming for a test. Languages in particular require daily study. Set a time each day for studying English and plan to study the different aspects--reading, writing, listening and speaking--at different study times.

    • 3

Use the available resources to learn English. The class you choose should offer you a number of different resources to learn English through the Internet. These could include textbooks, grammar notes, videos and podcasts. Be sure to make use of all of the options that are available to you.

    • 4

Complete English assignments on time. If you're participating in a class that has a set time frame, be sure to complete reading assignments and exercises by the due date. Turning in late assignments will affect your grade.

    • 5

Ask the teacher to clarify points you don't understand. Use the teacher as a valuable resource. You'll have access to a teacher by email, forum or through video chatting. You can ask the teacher for pronunciation help or to further explain grammar points.

    • 6

Participate actively in class discussions or role-playing activities. If the class features video discussions, this is an important tool to give you practice in practical situations. Don't be shy.
