How to Improve English Pronunciation Online

Multiple online resources exist to help English-language learners improve their pronunciation for free. Without hiring a tutor or attending English classes, you can get better at pronunciation on your own (although tutors and classes are definitely of benefit to some). News websites have helpful learning material, and online videos also offer good ways to learn English pronunciation.

Visit the Voice of America-Special English website. Click on "The Classroom" at the top of the page. The VOA Special English classroom has several activities and interactive lessons for all levels of English-language learners. The activities have audio by native English speakers so you can practice your pronunciation by repeating what you hear.

Visit the BBC's Learning English website, and scroll to the bottom of the page. Click on the links in the "Pronunciation tips" box that are of interest to you. This site is similar to that of Voice of America. However, this site offers a special section just for pronunciation, helping you to learn pronunciation tips and practice your pronunciation with the activities listed. The site also features a list of symbols used to write out English pronunciation. Knowing these symbols can help you learn pronunciation of words listed on English-language learning sites more quickly when the symbols are used to explain the pronunciation. Be aware that the pronunciation you learn on this site will be British.

Watch English-language lesson videos online as well as clips of news, movies and television shows on the Internet in English. Rewind and play the parts of the videos again that are difficult to understand. Repeat the pronunciation of difficult words out loud as many times as necessary.

Join an English language exchange, such as My Language Exchange. You will be paired up with an English speaker who wants to learn your language. You will offer helpful advice to the person learning your language in exchange for the other person helping you learn English. Ask your partner to correct your English whenever you mispronounce something or to help you with specific words you have trouble with.

Listen to news stories online. Both the VOA and BBC English learning pages have audio of stories you can listen to. The stories are read slowly and very clearly, so English-language learners can grasp the pronunciation of individual words and the gist of the stories more easily.
