Forms of Media Violence

Violence in media has been a hot topic for years, sparking discussions and debates about the effects of exposure to media violence. With today's technologies, forms of media violence are many and varied. From movies to video games to television, there are plenty of mediums to find violence in media, and exposure to these mediums for all age ranges is high.
  1. Video Games

    • From the realistic blood violence of war-based shooter games to the battle lore of epic role playing games, it's not difficult to think of a video game that features some sort of violence. According to IT Facts, 65% of American households play computer or console video games. Exposure to video games is high, for both children and adults. According to SafeYouth, of the 70 best-selling video games in 2001, 89% featured some sort of violence, making video games one of the most highly-saturated forms of media violence.

    Film and Television

    • According to USA Today, the average American household has 2.73 television sets, meaning that households on average have more TVs than people. Exposure to film and television violence is therefore extremely high. A study by UCLA found that 61% of television programs contain some violence. Many films also feature violent themes, and while the rating system does attempt to limit youth exposure to film violence, the Media Awareness Network found that it's not difficult for kids to sneak into R-rated movies and that many of these films are marketed to an under-18 demographic. In addition, most homes own a VCR or DVD player, making accessibility to film violence in the home very high.

    Internet

    • The Internet is a relatively new kind of media, but exposure and accessibility are extremely high. Violence on the Internet is not easy to measure because of the Internet's wide berth of content. A Reader's Digest article notes that the Internet makes real graphic violence -- such as the taped execution of reporter Daniel Pearl -- widely available. The kinds of violence on the Internet, from violence in funny videos and cartoons to real depictions of gruesome acts of violence, are many and widely accessible.
