To make the game boards, take pieces of construction paper and divide each paper into nine squares with lines. In each square, draw a shape in random order. To make the game cards, take a piece of construction paper, divide into nine sections, draw the shapes in each section and cut the shapes out. Give each player a game board. Lay the game pieces face down on a table and shuffle. Turn over a card, call out the shape and instruct the players to draw a line through that shape on their game board. The first player to get three shapes in a row wins the game.
To play musical shapes, cut different shapes out of colored construction paper and tape to the floor in a large circle, one shape for each child. Play music and have each child step from shape to shape until the music stops. As the music stops, each child must yell out the name of the shape he is standing on. Play a desired length of time, as this is not an elimination game.
Create a shape puzzle by cutting several large shapes out of stiff, colored poster board. Cut each large shape into four to six pieces to create a puzzle. Separate the class into several small groups of two or three students. Give each group a puzzle and a puzzle guide, instruct each group to complete the puzzle and identify the shape.
Place different shapes throughout the classroom. Designate one child as the shape caller and have him sit with his back to the room so he does not know what shapes are in each area. Divide the students into equal groups, one group for each shape, and instruct each group to stand in by their shape. The shape caller will randomly call out the name of a shape, and the group standing by that shape is eliminated from the round. Reset the game, and play another round. The last child standing is the winner.
Cut several different large shapes out of colored construction paper. Instruct the class that each shape represents an exercise such as running in place for circles, jumping jacks for squares or jumping up and down for a triangle. Each time you hold up a circle, the class must complete the exercise until instructed to stop.
