Choose the self-tanning product that is right for your skin tone and type. Sprays keep your hands from coming into contact with the product. Creams are rubbed in and may require gloves to prevent your palms from turning orange. Use a separate self-tanning moisturizer for the face. It is a gentler product suitable for facial skin.
Start with the face. Tie back your hair. To help achieve a lasting tan, cleanse using an exfoliating product to scrub off dead skin. Apply eye cream to create a barrier, which stops the under-eye area from appearing too dark. Massage facial moisturizer with self-tan into the face and neck, including behind the ears and at the hair line.
Exfoliate your body. This will prevent uneven coverage or streaks appearing in your tan. Ensure knees and elbows are well scrubbed. After towel drying, apply a moisturizer, paying attention to cover the body evenly, including dry spots. Wait 30 minutes before applying tanner.
Apply the tanner. Follow the instructions on the product. Rub into bony areas such as ankles, feet, knees and elbows. This ensures no lines or streak. For a more even finish, ask a friend to apply the product to your back.
Allow the tanner to dry for 10 minutes before dressing. This will prevent stains. Avoid sweating until your tan sets, which can take several hours.
Repeat the process every three days. Or, follow recommendations on the package. For a darker tan, apply the product every day until you achieve the desired shade.
