How to Print to a Non Postscript Printer

PostScript is a programming language developed by Adobe that allows you to capture graphics and text in a compact file you can translate on just about any computer platform. A PostScript printer driver allows you to "print to file." It's commonly used in graphic design applications. But if you do not have a PostScript printer, some standard non-PostScript printers allow you to print your document to a file in the same manner.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the document you want to print.

    • 2

Click "CTRL" and "P" to load your printer dialog box. Click the printer "Name" drop-down box to choose the name of the non-PostScript printer you have hooked up to your computer (for instance, Epson or Hewlett Packard).

    • 3

Press the "Properties" button to make adjustments to your printer settings if you need to. For instance, you can change the printing size, orientation or color setting (grayscale or full color) for your output file. Click "OK" to save the settings.

    • 4

Check the box that says "Print to file" on the printer dialog box. Click "OK" to print the document.

    • 5

Type in a name for your new output file --- it will have a "prn" file extension, which is the extension for non-PostScript printer files. Click "OK" to save the printer output file.
