How to Make a Double-Sided Pole Banner

A pole banner is an outdoor sign similar to the setup used to display a flag. You secure the banner to the top of the pole, then place it in the ground. A double-sided banner increases the chance that passersby will read your message. You can find the supplies you need to create your own simple double-sided pole banner at a craft, fabric or office supply store.

Things You'll Need

  • Piece of polyester fabric (the size and color of your banner)
  • Cut-out letters (glue-on or iron-on)
  • Cut-out images (optional)
  • Fabric glue
  • Iron (optional)
  • Wooden pole (longer than the banner height)
  • Whittling knife or flag stand

Instructions

    • 1

Lay your cut fabric on a table along with your cut-out letters. Polyester is most effective for a double-sided outdoor banner because it's durable and slightly thicker than other fabrics.

    • 2

Place the letters and cut-out images (if applicable) on the polyester fabric in the design that you want for your banner. It is important to lay them out before attaching them to ensure that you'll have room to fit your entire message. Leave at least 6 inches of space on the left side of the banner for folding it over the pole. Purchase a larger piece of fabric or smaller letters if you need more space.

    • 3

Lift up the letters and images and glue or iron them on one by one in the pattern you've created. If you're using iron-on letters, apply the iron on low to medium heat to each letter and allow the banner to cool off for a few minutes. Wait at least a few hours for each side of the banner to dry if you used the glue-on method.

    • 4

Carve a point at the bottom end of your wooden pole with a whittling knife so that you can insert it into the ground outside. You can also place the pole in a heavy flag stand.

    • 5

Apply fabric glue to the top end of the pole. Wrap the left side of the banner around the pole so that it meets on the other side. Allow the glue to dry for at least a few hours.

    • 6

Turn the banner over and apply cut-out letters and images with the same or a new message.
