Brainstorm goals in all aspects of your life: career, education, family, relationships, wellness and community service. As you list these goals, organize them in a three-column worksheet. Use the first column to describe goal. In the second column, classify the goal as short-term, medium-term or long-term. Usually, short-term goals can be achieved within three to six months while long-term goals may take more than five years.
Select at least one goal from each major area of your life. For example, you could focus on losing 20 pounds, getting a promotion at work and spending two weeks at a dream holiday destination. Write all the advantages of achieving each goal. Do not censor or edit any of your responses. Fill as many pages as necessary to create an intense desire to achieve your goals.
Focus on one goal at a time. For example, if you plan to lose 20 pounds within a three-month period, list all the obstacles you may encounter during that time period. Develop strategies to overcome each possible setback and create a list of the resources you will need to acquire. For example, you may need help with preparing meals and developing an exercise regimen.
Create a detailed plan for the next three months. Before getting that workplace promotion, you must prepare a resume and practice your interview skills. Schedule a lunch meeting with your mentor and discuss your strategy. Alternatively, you may decide to hire a career coach. Research a few coaches and arrange for at least one complimentary session before making any financial commitment. Enlist the support of your family and close friends.
Visualize your goal. Each day, spend a few minutes imagining yourself at your dream holiday destination. Obtain brochures from your travel agent and create a small collage or display board. Post these pictures or boards in strategic locations throughout your home. When you experience a setback, do not give in to frustration or defeat. Instead, reread the benefits of achieving this particular goal and get back on track as soon as possible.
