Fun Ways to Set Goals

The key to setting and accomplishing goals is to make it a fun and rewarding process. One of the reasons why people fail to stick to their goals is because they neglect to build in rewards for their good behavior. Incentives motivate people to establish new habits and work toward objectives. Another way to make setting goals fun is to do it with others. A little healthy competition and camraderie can make goal setting effective, meaningful and enjoyable.
  1. Don't go it alone

    • Studies show that people reach weight loss goals faster when they work out with a friend.

Set goals with at least one good friend. It should be someone you feel comfortable around, enjoy being with and trust. When you make goals with a friend, you can check in with one another about each other's progress. You can also work together on reaching your goals. If your goal is to lose weight, and so is your friend's, then you can exercise together. This will make it much more likely that you will actually work toward your goal, than if you tried to go it alone.

    Visualize your goal

    • You are more likely to reach a goal if you spend time and effort picturing the goal achieved.

Draw a picture of yourself achieving your goal. Don't just see it in your mind's eye. Draw it on a piece of paper. If you can't draw, pull pictures from a magazine. Spend a good hour on it and throw yourself into it. The final result needs to be a picture you get really excited by. Place this picture somewhere you will see every day. The act of looking at this inspiring image will keep you focused and happily moving toward your goal.

    Plan the reward

    • Kids who learn to delay gratification at an early age grow up to become adults who are highly capable of working toward complex goals.

Motivate yourself by attaching a really desirable reward to the completion of your goal. Sure the goal itself is the reward, but you need an added incentive for your good behavior. Many of your goals are likely to be ones that are good for you, such as losing weight or saving money. While these are noble goals, and important ones, they require a lot of self-sacrifice to achieve. By attaching a reward that is a little decadent, such as an expensive dress or a trip somewhere special, you give yourself an important extra drive.
